Double Jackpot

So I am pushing the cart along at the grocery store...fighting the Super Bowl shopping crowds..and I am thinking.....pork chops....with I don't know....broccoli ?...That doesn't sound too good....and I am over in the meat section...have the pork chops in my cart...and then I see it. Lurking in the meat section. A beautiful rib eye steak. One and a half pounds..perfect for 2.Jackpot. So I dump the pork chops, plop the beef in the cart ,head to the produce and what do I see there? Fresh asparagus. Double jackpot.

Came home and got out the cast iron skillet. That's what I am cooking the roast in.

After the roast comes out of the oven I will let it rest while I whirl up some yorkshire pudding batter...I'll heat the cooking fat (sorry, my new diet) and add the batter. Let it bake till it puffs way up and turns golden brown and serve it with au jus. I also got fresh horseradish and sour cream to go along side. Hello Mr. Toast...I think I am in your territory with this meal...being english and all..am I right , my friend?

As far as the asparagus goes I am just roasting it in the oven with olive oil and some of my precious pink sea salt.

I have been making yorkshire pudding and roast beef since I was in high school and still living at home. And I ALWAYS used the recipe from my FAVORITE cookbook. "The Treasury Of Great Recipes" by Mary and Vincent Price. You can see how soiled the pages are...well worn and well loved....indeed.

The drawing for the sprig tea cup is Monday and your response has overwhelmed me.
I saw some cute Valentine cookies today and a tin of Spring Cherry tea so I'll sweeten the pot with those goodies too..A little bit of Spring Cheer. I think we could all use some of that right about now.

Thank you all for your kind comments. It makes me feel good knowing that there are so many wonderful people out in this world. I am so lucky to have met each and every one of you. You're THE BEST !

  2. Mr. Farmhouse must be sitting at the table already. If I even tell Kim about this he will give me one of those sparkly eyed stares full of hope. And Butterscotch? he just requires you to hold the horseradish.

  6. And I am sitting here with nothing good at all to eat but wishing for some of your ribeye...glad there is only enough for two and, of course, you are 250 miles south...Outback is only a mile away. I guess if I am desperate I could go there.

  14. Your meal sounds gorgeous, I will have to try that combination, a bit early for asparagus here, in the meantime, I will content myself by dreaming of wild sea trout, with hollandaise sauce served with asparagus and new potatoes, look, see what you have made me do!

  15. I've never tasted Yorkshire pudding, but the rest of your meal sounds divine!! I bet the house had a wonderful aroma - yummy!
I like cookbooks that have the look of worn pages. It makes me know something very good is on them. I have my Mother's Betty Crocker's old cookbook, and many of the pages are just like that.
I'm sure you are as excited about your giveaway as we are!

  20. Lovely to hear about your meal! Did you know that a tradition in England is "Sunday Roast"? Every Sunday pubs serve Sunday Roast and Yorkshire Pudding. It brings back lovely memories of our visit & having Sunday Roast at a pub in Manchester, outside of Cambridge.

We were with friends who were all celebrating a 30 something Bday! We had poppers that had party hats in them. ...

yes, fat makes popovers perfect! mmm!

  30. The Pretzel Bread, I never blogged about it, so you didn't miss it! I had seen the recipe floating around but never tried it. But last week, when we ate at the Frankenmuth Brewery, they served pretzel breadsticks and a delicious mustard dip while you waited for your dinner. I knew I had to try making them at home! Here is a link to the recipe I used http://twobites.wordpress.com/2007/07/13/signature-pretzel-bread/. It specifies making them into rolls, but I make them into breadsticks. They are fabulous! Now if I could only find a mustard like the one we had at the brewery!!

Let me know if you try making them!

  31. Now that is my kind of jackpot! I still want to have a big Sunday roast lunch with lots of friends that includes beef and Yorkshire pudding but somehow, pathetically, I haven't gotten around to it yet. Soon, you've inspired me.

  35. We would have been just as excited to find the roast and asparagus. My husband and I are both good cooks and enjoy happening upon the unexpected in the market. Although we have the roast and Yorkshire pudding on Christmas day, it would not stop us from making the same meal on any other weekend if we were to find a roast like that. We make our puddings in cupcake tins though...this way our kids have their portion and there is no fighting. Yes, Yorkshire pudding is so good it is worth fighting over.

  40. Ok you had me at the rib eye and then sealed the deal with the yorkshire pud. My mum a true blue english lass now a true blue aussie, makes the best in the world yorky pud, oh my how delicious.

  41. That looks like a smashing meal. I have to tell you that I always think of beef as the garnish to a plate of Yorkshire pudding and horseradish. I may be one of the few people who actually craves horseradish and sometimes cooks specific things just so I have an excuse to use it.
