I"m Done With January

I know....still one week to go before we can say good bye to this sorry month. I guess along with everyone else...I don't like January. Try to keep myself from going into a real bad slump after Summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and then this. Cold, dark, rainy.....BOOORING. So since we are close to leaving it behind..I decided to nudge things along and pep up my kitchen window. Got my kitchen curtains back out this morning..aren't they cute? Got them off ETSY. So I ironed them and got them back up for spring, the little cup in the window with the lady and the rosemary branch was a Christmas gift from my dear friend, Julie Whitmore at ETSY. Her work is just charming. I have collected it for years..and I love and treasure every piece. The napkin holder with the strawberry on it is also from Julie and the tiny little chicken in the easter bonnet sitting in the napkin ring is vintage. As is the vintage pancake flour box. I got it when Julie and I were antiquing one day in Los Gatos.....maybe antiquing and spring aren't that far off....we can only hope.

Speaking of hope...you might notice on my side bar is a button from the wonderful and beloved Christina at Soul Aperture...one of my most favorite people and blogs. If January is getting you down too...go over there on Wednesday, January 27th. Christina is hosting a day of posting THE SIMPLE THINGS in our lives. And for each one that participates...she is donating one dollar to Doctors Without Borders...We're still here Haiti..as Christina would say. Be sure and check it out. It makes everybody feel better.....

  10. You would think that the first month of the year would be the most exciting and joyous but I agree with you, January is the pits. I think for me, it has to do with the fact that we have so much snow on the ground right now. It's hard to think about spring gardening when it is so cold outside.

  11. Ooooo, how springy!! I love it! I am weird, I guess, but I love January! It feels like such a wonderful hibernation month after the hustle and bustle of December. I get busy with cooking, baking, my knitting, good books and art and just enjoy the down time.

I love that you post your weekend menus - makes me want to come over for dinner again! Your desserts sounded especially wonderful!!

Off to check out your friend's etsy shop!! Love, Silke

  13. This January has been depressing for me. I was sick for more than half of the month. Spring can't get here fast enough for me.

  16. Hello there! Glad you stopped by...I was actually thinking of you this morning...(hoping now that I have this fact straight in my memory), that you had only recently...back in the fall...lost your mother. So for sure, it has been a dreay winter for you...no matter the weather.
Now you have to love old January just a little....since I was born in it...well just one reason to like it...guess that is enough!
Also, don't forget that tomorrow is Bobbie Burns's birthday too!
    "Green grow the rashes, oh!"
Hold on, February will be here in a flash!

  18. Love the curtains and the pottery! I'm with you --I DREAD January every year! Abolutely loathe every bit of dreariness about it. Sprucing things up with bright cheerful colors, fresh flowers all help to dispel the gloom! V.

  20. I love the flour packaging, it is so pretty.

I hope you don't mind me mentioning this but your buttons are not linking to anything, try typing in the link http// reference in the information in the picture gadget. It is easy to do but not so easy to explain! Each page on the internet has its own http reference, find this at the very top of your screen, where the information loads. I hope this helps.

Thanks also for your very kind comments on my blog.

  21. Kary, I'm in the doldrums, I guess, one month seems like the other since I lost my forensic nursing job...it will actually be a year Feb 20 that I have not worked. After 45 years as an R. N., I have never felt so useless - the financial disaster this forced retirement has created is overwhelming. The only good that has come out of it for me is blogging and the fact that I've written many more poems. I just did one about growing old which I thought was cute and I posted over the weekend.

Your page is nice and cheery, though, and has made me in a better frame of mind as I head to bed!

  24. Let me be the first to wish you a Happy February. Just a short jump and it will soon be Spring.

January has been a dreary month. First it stays below freezing the south for days and then rains like it was never going to end. C'mon Spring.
Stay dry. I know California has been getting a lot of rain too.

  25. Just adore your window curtains! Need to get my house cleaned out really well, and then I'll be ready for spring. Will visit your friend's site this Wednesday. My sister had volunteered for Doctors Without Borders in the past. They are certainly admirable!

  27. Yeah January hasn't been the most exciting of months...still it has given me some time to move forward - albeit slowly... I now have a cold though so not so great...January is the month for colds... :( xxx

  28. I am with you all the way...January be gone, bring on the February festivities! Personally, I will be happiest when I can get back into the garden and that will have to wait for much warmer weather around here. Your curtains are very perky, and yes, we need to do what ever it takes to make us smile. I hope that you have dried out from those storms.
    ♥, Susan

  30. I don't like January either--maybe its extra 5-10 pounds that I gained from all of the wonderful holiday food, and I can't zip my pants, maybe its that I lost both of my parents way too young (51 and 64) In January, and maybe its because it rained 5 days last week...you're right, I am done with it!

  32. Oh, the Simple Things? Been there, love that. Thank you for the heads up as it were. It's nice to have things to look forward to, isn't it, Kary? I must tell you, it's not only January I want to leave behind but pretty much the whole year. Although, of course, we can't always go back. Well, then here's to brighter days ahead, and I did just want to tell you here how much you add to that. You really do! Those small things like little sweet comments every now and then truly can make a big difference when devastating things go down. thank you again. I raise my cup of brewed cheer to you and yours.

Strawberries are such a happy fruit. You can't be around them with them conjuring all sorts of happy thoughts!

  35. Hello, I am visiting you today on the wake of Christina's love. And how I glad I am that I got to visit with you in your kitchen, the heart and soul of a home. How lovely that you have surrounded yourself with the little things that make the day special. Lovely.

  36. Oh, I do LOVE your curtains! What a mood booster! I had stopped by before, but my computer was misbehaving and all your pics were not appearing--but now they are...yippie! I think January may be one of those months that we all kind of flounder around in... we try to take stock of the previous year, decide what to do for the new year, put away the seasonal decorations and putter around. Maybe it's just a month to prepare for the rest of the year... Yep, just a few more days of January and then I think we can begin to say to one another, "Spring is just around the corner!" Thanks for following along with my blog! Stop by anytime for a visit!
