I'm Melting and Dreaming of a White Christmas
See that. That's ME !!! I took that picture less than a minute ago. Here. In California. On Sunday, December 12th !!! And it felt good on my feet cause it's so HOT out here...You see...it is 80 degrees today. And NO. I am NOT HAPPY about it. Not one little bit. It's CHRISTMAS. Teddy and I are sitting here with all the doors and windows WIDE OPEN. I am looking at my Vermont Castings woodstove and oak wood piled by the door with tears in my eyes. I think I'll go and turn down my Andy Williams Christmas music...it just dosen't seem right. How sad is this? The Christmas tree even looks sad baking in the hot sun. I wait all year for Christmas. And now this. Did you notice in my profile info that I am "pretending" that I live in Vermont. What a stretch that is. Not even close. But I will not complain anymore, my friends. I will carry on and be grateful for all that I do have. I am going to the market to get the dried fruit to make my Panettone....I make it every year...80 degrees or not. All I can do is hope that it breaks soon. I know I have zero chance of snow...but rain would be nice. Stay cozy....wherever you are.
Sending december love,
Kary and Teddy
Hey you:),
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sweet comments and stopping by to welcome Benjamin:). I can't believe it's 80 degrees in CA!! I'm keeping my fingers (and toes!) crossed for Christmas to bring some snow to your area (a long stretch, but hey, special things can happen on Christmas;)).
I hope you're all well and look forward to sharing the holidays with you here;).
xoxo,
Blair
It's hot here in Az as well...would like a bit cooler to feel more like Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can suggest is sitting in front of the open refrigerator door! It wouldn't seem like Christmas to me either unless it's cold and snowy.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha sorry dear friend! Xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteOh, I know the feeling! I grew up in Sunderland, Vt {a tiny town!}, and I sure miss the 4 seasons! At least it's not 80* here in Fl. today! Turn your a/c on COLD and FullBlast! and close your curtains so you can't see outside! Are you from Vt? ...your snowy Vt pix on your sidebar sure make me miss it more! Merry Christmas to you!
ReplyDeleteWe just had a blizzard...below zero this morning. I'll trade places with you! The photos of Vermont are beautiful... just keep looking at them. Your 'bad luck' might change soon!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! 80 degrees? It is 26 degrees and snowing like mad in here in Tennessee, which is really out of character for this state. I will wish for some of it to come your way!
ReplyDeleteoh no..time to move!!!! i simply must have 4 seasons!!! i am waiting for the storm to hit!
ReplyDeleteIt is truly hard to feel sorry for you when I'm sitting here freezing my butt off. An 80 degree Christmas sounds perfect to me. No, you do not have to have snow to have a wonderful Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI will exchange weather with you any time you like if you want a white Christmas :) Diane
ReplyDeleteCome on, baby..... next yaer you and Teddy are going to spend your holiday in Vermont...I like there too!!! Last thurday we had 83°F...but now it's cold..... but no snow....maybe only on the vulcano peak....not here!!! Hugs, Flavia and MOU
ReplyDeleteCome on....probably it won't snow in California...but next Xmas you can go to spend Xmas Holidays in Vermont....hugs, Flavia
ReplyDeleteNo, Christmas should be cold, really - but after all our snow, 80 degrees sounds blissful!
ReplyDeleteWell, I've got the space heater on, Kary, in my basement rec room bedroom conversion. Don't know why I have the shivers but I'd like to stay under the covers all day. With a move on the horizon, come the end of February, and an eternal list of things to do, I'm a true bah humbug this year. Not a Christmas decoration in sight and no presents wrapped...and there will be very few. At least, we're headed to my son's mother-in-law's for Christmas Day. I expect it will be cold in the Sacramento area!
ReplyDeleteoh my! It's been snowing all day here in Ohio! If I could, I'd package you up some snow and mail it to you! haha
ReplyDeleteOh my, 80 degrees!?! You can have it be a white christmas all you want in your mind!!! But... If you did move to Vermont, it would definitely be white (and you wouldn't be too far from me! (he hee!)... Anyway, I like that you are "pretending" to be from VT. Happy Holidays to you and Teddy!
ReplyDeleteAnd just 2 hours north, it is overcast and misty. Wish you were here.
ReplyDeleteSend a few of those degrees over here Kary - could do with some warm sun on my skin! Have a good week, Lesley.
ReplyDeleteJust so cold here at the moment - could do with a bit of that heat!!
ReplyDeleteOh sweet Kary, I'm so sorry to hear that! I so do understand how you feel!! But! there is still chance the temperature will drop!!! Keep on hoping. Keep on dreaming! We were covered in snow and today it felt like spring here. The birds were chirping, no snow what so ever, sun shining ... but me too, I do believe for the cold and I definitely do dream about white Christmas :-) Thinking of you and yes you are right don't let the weather to take away the Christmas spirit ... xoxo
ReplyDeleteWell now, 80 degrees is a pretty mean phooey for the holiday season.
ReplyDeleteWishing a cold snap to hurry up and bless you and Teddy Sweet Face!
We have devoured the scones, first time baking for me, but it was so easy. Comfort and joy tea sipped from the loving teacup.
Blessings and love, magnolia
Oh I hope it cools down a bit for you all. I spent every Christmas of my childhood in sunny Orlando, Florida with my mom’s family. Your 80 degrees actually seems Christmasy to me in a weird way as that is all we knew. I have the best memories of those years but I am glad to be able to spend it in WV now. I am sending big, white, fluffy flakes your way in my heart :)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Amy
So nice to see you again! We've had winters in the past that are very warm. However, I don't think this year will be warm. I've been wearing a scarf and gloves for weeks. But this is not to make you feel bad.
ReplyDeleteI love the wax Christmas ornaments you have. Is there a special name for them? My Mother had them when we were kids, but they've all seem to have disappeared. I would love to buy some.
Take care my friend.
I would most definitely send some snow, as soon as we get some! New England winter isn't quite like it used to be!!! But I have to say, I think I am glad it isn't 80 degrees right now (unless it is in front of the woodstove!), I need a break!
ReplyDeleteOh Kary, that is warm, actually rather toasty. I hope it cools down for you very soon. A few years ago I went to a cooking class and she made Pannetone(sp)?. Boy it was a lot of work. I never made one. You must take a picture of it when it is done. Giada makes bread pudding with it or maybe it's Ina not sure now,but did it look amazing. I'll have to go through my cookbooks and see who it was. A big pat and scratch behind the ears to Teddy!!
ReplyDeleteWell, when it is 80 degrees it must be hard to pretend you live in Vermont. It is blizzards in Minnesota and Wisconsin today, brrr. I live in California where it is 60 and sunny, and I like this temperature for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for snow here! Like a lot of folks who commented, I need my four seasons! Hang in there, Kary, you may get snow some year soon! xxoo Nancy
ReplyDeleteI would gladly share with you. We are having snow...and a winter weather advisory. No school tomorrow! Wind chill below zero. Crazy weather for us, but maybe some baking in my future in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI'll trade you a little of our rain for some of your sun. We're in the middle of a series of La Nina storms and every few hours I go halfway down the basement steps, look at the inch or two of standing water filtering s-l-o-w-l-y down the floor drain, sigh mightily, and return upstairs where it's dark and gray, but at least dry. I would love an 80° Christmas, but I do have to admit that your sidebar photos look awfully cozy.
ReplyDeleteKary, we're waiting for a flash freeze tomorrow. I'd rather be where you are!
ReplyDelete80 degrees is too hot--I agree. Try 22 with a windchill of "why am I out here."
ReplyDeleteHopefully your weather will change.
Melinda
I know you don't want to hear this, but we're in the middle of a winter storm. We've got about 6 inches of snow on the ground with more to come. It wasn't that cold today, mid 30's, but since the wind picked up, it's gotten pretty chilly.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to email you a picture that I took today. You'll understand why when you see it!
Wow! Chilly here in Santa Rosa... December and eighty degrees simply do not go together in my mind, so I understand how you are feeling.
ReplyDeleteI am making a second batch of your shortbread cookies since the Thanksgiving batch was such a hit with the family. That recipe is a keeper!
I understand how you feel. I would love 4 seasons but all my people are Florida people now. What can I do? Hope to be rich enough some day to travel a little more. I long for fall every year and I long for snow every Christmas, but I know it must be really awful to have to live in the harsh conditions so many people are experiencing now. I will just send you love and join in your longing for a white Christmas.
ReplyDeleteAw :( Hot weather or not, I know you'll have a wonderful Christmas ♥
ReplyDeleteHalf hour up the road and its about 75. But still, the neighbors are BBQing. I have to say it smells awfully good, but where's our Chestnuts roasting on an open fire?
ReplyDeletexx
donkey in the Christmas pines
You all have had the craziest weather this year, haven't you?? I hope it cools off in time for Christmas! XX!
ReplyDeleteHi Kary, so sorry it's so hot for you, it's been freezing on the East cost most of the week, except this evening it hit 53! And it's been raining like mad and windy all day! Sounds like you'll have fun baking your panettone - save a slice for me! Duke says hello to Teddy! Hope it cools off for you!
ReplyDeleteMary
Nope..it must be cold and hopefully snowy for christmas
ReplyDeletethen it can go
Next year I agree..you should go to Vt
Oh no! I love me some 80 degree days, but not right before Christmas. Come January 1st, yes.
ReplyDeleteDearest Kary - who knows what's happening with our weather? One day here it's -16c, the next (like today) it's foggy & +5c!! Alice is confused - sweater or no sweater??
ReplyDelete80 is hard to imagine...I'm baking Christmas Speculaas Cookies this am, smells like Christmas here. Alice is in bed....:o)
Love to you & Teddy, thanks SO much for the BEAUTIFUL card. He has pride of place on the shelf!! Love love love to you both - & hoping for BAD weather soon! xoxo Alice & Me
We always seem to yearn for what we have not got! Haha! I'd take a couple of 80-degree days about now. But I do understand how you feel. Cold and snow do put you in a holiday spirit. Hugs to you and Teddy. :)
ReplyDeleteoh it's so funny that you have summer now in ca! here we are freezing and it's gonna be worst :)
ReplyDeletemaybe you can come here for christmas? you woild be very much welcome!
have a sweet day!!
justyna
I've just packaged up an inch of snow and have posted it to you... should be there in a week or so and i'm sure it will still be frozen solid?!?!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing how hot it is out there! It's cold here, you can come visit if you want to - if you bring your woodstove with you. We've been talking about how much we would like a woodstove here at MHC.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope it cools off soon!
xo
Claudia
I could send you some extra snow - we got 12" over the weekend and the temperatures are plummeting along with high winds.
ReplyDeleteYou will be the one to envy when February and March roll around - our Spring won't arrive until late April-early May. Your long growing seasons are such a blessing.
Have a good week and wishing you cooler weather.
I would gladly take your 80 degrees : ) We had a winter storm yesterday. Blowing and drifting snow and 13 degree this morning. It's pretty out, but the roads are hazardous. Maybe you could turn the air conditioner way down and close all the blinds and put on the "White Christmas" movie : )That might help you to feel like you are in Vermont with all that snow...snow...snow! But seriously, I hope it cools down for you & Teddy. 80 degrees is a little out of my comfort zone too : )
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer! Some people it wouldn't bother one bit if it was 80... and here you are dreaming of snow. And I am wishing it was warmer here today - in michigan- My husband can not even work on our new home because with the wind chill it is 15 below zero. A happy medium would be nice for both of us!
ReplyDeleteHave a pretty day!
Kristin
dear kary,
ReplyDeletewhat happened?? we have the same heat wave, and only last week it was cold enough for a scarf here. i was even ready to put a sweater on owen.
saturday, the hottest day, i spent decorating the tree and trying my best to get in the mood. plus, it's hard to knit in this heat and i've got gifts to make still.
i wanted to tell you, last week when chuck was climbing a mountain in mexico, i put owen in doggie day care while i was at work. he made a best friend they said, another little guy with the name of teddy!
girl, you'd be lovin' Illinois right about now.
ReplyDeleteget outside and work on that new years tan! : )
ReplyDeleteI love wintery weather at christmas too.. but after january passes I will be praying for sunshine.
Have a great week.
I wish I could do that! It is unseasonably cold in Arkansas.
ReplyDeletei will mail you some snow when i am home in colorado for christmas!
ReplyDelete80 sounds nice right now... the rain here in seattle is just intense...
i sure do miss you too friend...i will be in better touch... been runnin too hard and now look where it got me???
xoxo
i think we need happy thoughts for december!! i know i do!!! xx
ReplyDeletecannot believe i was not a follower... i am now!
It's frigid here in Maryland. And you know what? I kinda like it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting me. I hope you do get some cold weather for Christmas. Since you have the Tasha Tudor cookbook, if you ever try the Dundee cake recipe I found it a bit dry, so poked holes in it and squeezed a fresh orange over it - it made all the difference in the world.
ReplyDeletePretending to live in Vermont! You cracked me up! It will cool down that is unseasonably warm for there! Traci
ReplyDeleteIf you only knew how cold it has been here in Wisconsin lately! I guess the grass is always greener...cute feet ;)
ReplyDeleteI know you will have a nice Christmas in spite of the heat! It could all change very quickly and Christmas is 10 days away!
ReplyDeletei love panettone! we have it on xmas morning. you are brave to bake your own ; )
ReplyDeletexo
Oh no...I agree my friend I am not sure I would want that heat at Christmas either...I was complaining about not having snow but at least it is rainy and dull so it sort of feels like Christmas. Wish I could send you some of our weather. xoxoxoo Hugs
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to say thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! I have to admit, with the current temp here being about 25 degrees (and that is warmer than the 10 degrees it was the other night!) I am just a bit jealous of your 80 degree weather! I would love to trade! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteWell, Kary, no snow, but it is freezing here in Florida. Uncomfortably so. Hope it cools off for you soon. Love, Shari
ReplyDeleteOh my. My piggies are firmly planted in the woolly socks. Wish I could box up some snow and icicles and ship them off to you!
ReplyDeleteIt was quite cold here today as we had an "artic blsst"system pass over -- but no snow as yet. When I was in Denver last week it was also unusually warm there.
ReplyDeleteWeather is so easily changable..I hope your temperatures cool down soon while ours go above freezing! :)
Hugs, Pat
80 degrees?? Wow. It's chilly and rainy here in Vancouver. I'm wishing you a "less hot" Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWell, if you would like to cool down go to this blog: The Blue Ridge Gal or just go to You Tube and look up: Snowdrive Dec.16,2010. made by deedah1
ReplyDeleteshe is driving her dog to the vet and taking a video .. It's in the blue ridge mountains and it's snowing.
Or if you would like to laugh look at this on You Tube: Jolly Holi-dog Celebrations
Made by Best Friends Videos..
ta ta for now..from Iowa 5 inches of snow and it's beautful...15 degrees.. nice
Awe sweetie,
ReplyDeleteI want a White Christmas too. It's in the 60's here, and I'm freezing... and to be honest I would trade weather with you in a New York Minute.
BUT.... I would still want a White Christmas. We had snow last year. Marley went crazy... she just a puppy and she scooted around with her head up trying to lick the snowflakes.
You see, the trouble here, is that we have CONCRETE, not a lot of land, so it all ices up. You get some the snow, but it's very dangerous, and I end up spending a lot of time praying for people.
The idea is to trick your mind. You can do that. Put some antlers on and get some reindeer slippers. That's what I do. It works every time!
Kiss that baby for me!
Joey
If you want cold, you can always stay at my place in Vermont! It'll be plenty chilly with the heat off but there is a big fireplace and lots of wood....
ReplyDeleteLOL Kary....Why don't you....Just for a little while, PRETEND you're in Australia spending Christmas with me....It's ALWAYS freakin' hot here in December & our Christmas lunch more often than not is a BBQ outside on the deck or at the beach....!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers from someone who would love just ONE white Christmas & would NEVER think of turning Andy Williams down....No I'd CRANK him right up so I could hear over the AIRCON....hahahahaha....,
Tamarah :o)
Hope things have cooled down for you by now. It is raining and cool here. I hope you are enjoying the holidays otherwise.
ReplyDeleteYou've made me jealous . Perhaps we could swap. I love being barefoot but mine have been cased in double socks and snowboots for the last ten days .
ReplyDeletePanetone ! I've just found a copy of "Bitter Almonds" in a secondhand book shop , with lots of delectable Scicilian recipes for pastries and jams . I'm just going to enjoy reading it though , they're way too complicated for me to attempt !
I´ll send some snow over, we´ve got loads! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI wonder what it would take for us to be truly happy. We are complaining that its cold here and no snow! Seems we are never satisfied! ha! I think we should concentrate on more important things in life and enjoy each moment we are given. I hope you have a beautiful Christmas no matter the temperature! Its what we make of it right? Have a blessed one my friend. Merry Christmas~
ReplyDeleteYou really got us all laughing here with this one!
ReplyDelete
