I Never Left

We never left home. I really don't know what to say...I just hope that most of my dear friends have pets...cause the reason we never left was Buddy. Problem number 1. As some of you know back in December he was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea. And most of the time he is just fine. But he started coughing...and to be perfectly honest with you, I couldn't leave him.My brother Mark and his wife Julie were coming to stay..they have done it before and they do a great job, but this was different. I just would have been too worried. Problem number 2 was our destination. We had decided on Lake Tahoe...but a huge storm is due to blow in the day we were due to leave and to make it home it would mean driving on Interstate 5...known as The Grapevine in California and it is no fun. It runs up and down the center of the state and it is a very dangerous road even in good weather....so now I am laying awake at 3 in the morning wondering what would happen to Buddy and Whiskey and Dande and Pixie and Mumbie, not to mention my hummingbirds, doves, goldfinches,Tony the blue jay and all the other assorted critters that depend on me. What if we crashed...oh, I have to tell you I was making myself crazy. So we skipped the trip. We'll wait for another time.It just didn't feel right. I did not want to go. So instead, I went to the yarn shop here in downtown San Luis and am taking a knitting class. I am so excited about it. The lady, Anne got me started yesterday afternoon, but the class is tomorrow at 10. It is for making a pair of pretty fingerless gloves. You use 4 needles, number 2, very tiny... Anne got me going ...and I think I am getting it. Buddy is fine, it was just a scare, but I couldn't leave him behind. There was no way. So we're home, knitting, waiting for rain and holding Buddy close.
I am gonna say it.....I really did miss all of you and our visits and am I glad to be HOME.

  2. You KNOW us fellow pet-mommies understand!
One of these days I hope you will go on a road trip to Napa, and take photos for us all so we can live vicariously through you :)
Calistoga is also great....man, I miss California sometimes!
Hope Buddy is on the mend. I hope Anne knows how lucky she is that you've stepped into her life...my sweet kindred spirit!
    Have fun knitting!

  3. Yes, it's hard to leave ailing pets. We had animals for ages; we hardly ever left.

  5. This is Kate here, the other country girl. And this does it. Totally. I am adding you to my blogroll despite the fact that I need another blog to read like a need a hole in the head. But I can't help it. I was so touched by your reasons not to leave.
And that your first project is fingerless gloves. Wow. I wish I could knit like that!

  6. I'm in your court. Our Tonys (pets) are our responsibility and they depend on us. You can tell when they look at us with those sweet brown eyes. (or blue or green)
Someday when I have a donkey, I'll probably never leave town again. I'll have his stall in the barn and make my pots with him, apples at the ready. Gloves look great. Beautiful color.

  7. I completely understand why you canceled your trip, for worry about your adored pet, and also the road conditions.
How fun to try knitting a new project, fingerless gloves.

  8. Oh dearest Kary, if this had been Alice then we would have done EXACTLY the same! They are so dependent on us aren't they? And that's part of the joy of having the dears. Home feels good, I agree. I miss everyone when I'm away too! So glad you're back for this lovely weekend...Jamie has just started his show right this minute, all about eggs! I'll wave at the screen for you - darling man! Love to you and little Buddy boy from me & Alice xoxo

  10. Having a dog through you, I wouldn't be able to leave our Buddy either! And Lake Tahoe this time of year! Beautiful, but oh what snow they get. Even the locals get tired of the thousands of feet they get! LOL! See you are learning the art of knitting! It was good to stay home! xxoo and big love for Buddy! Nancy

  11. we have two dogs (Buddy and Lucky) - every time we go on a vacation and have to leave them somewhere, my 9 year old always cries the night before. The night before she always says that she doesnt want to go and she would rather stay home with Buddy and Lucky. One time we went to India for a month, and my mom and dad were house sitting and taking care of them. My mom said that they cried at night for the first week. And over there in India, my daughter would cry every night because she would miss them too much. Sorry about the long ramble - but I know how you feel.

  13. Sometimes you have to follow your heart, we have a dog but fortunately have someone who will look after him who also loves him.

Your knitting looks lovely, it seems the whole world is knitting again!

  14. I am glad you didn't go on account of Buddy. It would have been stressful on everyone, including him.
Funny you mention knitting. We had a major snow storm yesterday, and today I took out my knitting and began again. I want to take a class because I know how to knit, along w/other stitches, but I don't know how to bind off and stop. This scard is going to be mucho long! :) Take Care.

  15. Sorry to hear about Buddy. Poor little guy. I would have done exactly what you did. There are always other times for vacations and days away. Sending love and hugs your way. And way cool about knitting!

  18. Too bad you did not make that trip, but you said it yourself - you would not enjoy it anyhow.

  19. I think you did the right thing. If your instinct was telling you to stay home, it was wise to listen to it. Like you said, you wouldn't have been able to enjoy yourself. I hope Buddy is doing well.

Your knitting class sounds like fun! I can crochet (a little), but I wish I could knit. I can't wait to see your gloves when they're finished!

  24. Kary, I fully understand! I've put off trips because of pet problems and expected bad weather. There is always time to get away in the future. Sometimes having a quiet little vacation at home is fun too! Enjoy your knitting project.
